Greek Mythology & Sparta API
A free JSON API of 144 entries: Greek gods, monsters, heroes, places, events and the customs of ancient Sparta. No API key, no sign-up, no rate limit, CORS enabled. Every entry says whether it is attested in ancient sources and cites them (Hesiod, Herodotus, Plutarch, Xenophon, Apollodorus and others).
The data is the lexicon of the novel Acenes of Sparta: The Dragon Slayer. Entries marked "attested_in_ancient_sources": false belong to the novel's world only; filter on that field if you want strictly classical material.
Quick start
fetch("https://acenes-of-sparta.pages.dev/api/v1/entries/medusa.json")
.then(r => r.json())
.then(j => console.log(j.data.name, j.data.summary));
curl https://acenes-of-sparta.pages.dev/api/v1/categories/creatures.json
Random entry, client side:
const {data} = await (await fetch("https://acenes-of-sparta.pages.dev/api/v1/entries.json")).json();
const pick = data[Math.floor(Math.random() * data.length)];
